Shitty First Drafts

by Diego Selem

Dear Mrs. Lammot,

I am writing to you because I was assigned to read your essay “Shitty First Drafts,” and I agree with your argument. I think discharging all your ideas on paper can lead you to write an excellent essay. I do it all the time, and it works very well, so I felt instantly identified as soon as
I read the title of this essay. I have wrote countess of shitty first drafts, but I have managed to enhance them by peer reviewing or editing myself.

Something that helps me out from time to time is writing bullet points for my first draft. That way, I tackle every bullet point while organizing my ideas. They are a speedy and easy way to write something, and it also helps me brainstorm and bring new ideas to the table. They just help me think so much faster than I usually do, it’s like magic if you ask me. Copying and pasting information from a direct source also helps me get my ideas in line. Of course, I don’t copy paste anything into my writing (unless it’s a cited direct quote), but I feel that it is an easy way to find a chronological order for an essay.

However, there are many capable writers in this world that I don’t think need to write a “shitty” first draft to write a good article. So on that part, I slightly disagree. I’m not saying that they write perfect first drafts, nobody does, but they’re not bad enough for me to be able to call them “shitty.”

In summary, it is essential to review your first draft and turn it into a good second draft, and a terrific third draft. However, everyone does it in a different way, whether it is bullet points, a mind map, or just writing meaningless words in a piece of paper. In my opinion, finding a way that is comfortable for you to write a first draft is the most important thing. Not everybody writes the same way. Therefore, you need to find which style of first draft is the more adequate for our style of writing and editing. I would love to hear back from you with your opinion.

Best regards,
Diego Selem.
