The Rise of Tyler, the Creator

by Diego Selem

Tyler, the Creator is the most improved artist of all time. He has proved to be a dynamic artist who can rap, produce, and compose at a top level. A genre-bending Jack of all trades, in other words. However, it took Tyler a little while to get recognized as the unit he is today.

Tyler’s first output, Bastard, is a controversial mixtape that showcased his aggressive and explicit delivery for the first time. Although many people grew fond of this mixtape, many people (myself included) think Bastard is not a good record. Most of the lyrics are disgusting, and some sounds are unpleasant to hear.

Tyler’s following three records, Goblin, Wolf, and Cherry Bomb, were a massive upgrade over the aforementioned Bastard. As a result, he started receiving more recognition from other artists and fans. However, he wasn’t up there just yet. Although these records were decent, they still weren’t top-notch rap records.

In 2017, he broke out with the release of his 4th studio album, Flower Boy. This record put Tyler at the top of the rap game, along with the likes of Travis Scott, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar. Flower Boy was nominated for a Grammy Award in the «rap album of the year» category. Unfortunately for Tyler, Flower Boy did not win him the Grammy, but he won our hearts with it. Some of the best tracks in the album are See You Again, November, and Who Dat Boy.

Although Flower Boy was a great success, Tyler’s next album, Igor, was a home run hit. Tyler gave us one of the greatest albums of the XXI century; surprisingly enough, it’s not even a rap album. Even Tyler confessed in an interview that he was amazed that his album got so much approval from the fans. It’s very abstract and experimental but simultaneously very coherent, and its lyrics are often simple, yet you can interpret them in many different ways. Tyler tells us a story about his breakup in this record, and each song represents a phase of the breakup process. Igor won a Grammy award for «Rap album of the year,» even though Tyler himself said this wasn’t a rap album. Some notable tracks in this record are Igor’s Theme, Earfquake, and New Magic Wand.

After getting very experimental and abstract with Igor, Tyler wanted to return to rap for his next outing, which he did in style. That’s when he released Call Me if You Get Lost. Unlike Igor, this album doesn’t focus too much on a story. Instead, Tyler demonstrates his unique flow and rapping style, returning to the more aggressive and explicit flow he was known for. However, he did tone it down with his lyrics. Even though they are graphic, they don’t get to the point where they become unpleasant. He nailed a good balance in this album. Tyler won another Grammy award for «rap album of the year» with Call Me If You Get Lost.  Some notable songs on this record are Corso, Lumberjack, and Juggernaut.

Tyler has been the most improved artist of the XXI century. He went from releasing an erratic mixtape to one of the most impressive three-album runs the music industry has ever seen. He is one of the most complete artists in the business, as he is a top producer, rapper, and songwriter. If you have yet to listen to his albums, do so, they are worth the listen.
